Why "STAY GOLD?"
Nothing Gold Can Stay
Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.
-Robert Frost
In The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, this brilliant teenage girl writes an incredible tale of teenage boys, reminding us to stay true to ourselves and to hold tight to wonder and kindness despite what the world will bring. Her character, Jonnycake, as he lay dying after suffering burns, whispers to his friend, Ponyboy, "Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold."
It is in reference to Frost's poem and an admonishment to not forfeit wonder. So it is in Golden Valley: we refuse to forfeit the beauty of this city and instead choose to STAY GOLD.
